Florida Skunk Ape.
In the spirit of "the great outdoors" of Florida and the whole vacation thing how about a little folklore? Since my chidhood I have always been a sucker for the Bigfoot stories. We have our very own Sasquatch down here in Florida. The Florida Skunk Ape is said to be approximately 7 feet tall with red (and black) hair, similar in appearance to an orangutan or gorilla, and to reside in or around the Florida Everglades. It was reportedly seen in West Palm Beach only a few short years ago. A witness said, “My window was down and it was horrible, like diarrhea that’s been sitting in the toilet for three hours”. He said he saw the creature on the side of the road. “I’ve never seen anything like that before. I think its eyes may have been red because of the reflection in the headlights.” Evidence of the Florida Skunk Apes’s existence includes hundreds of documented sightings, some hair samples, and several foot casts. This week (during our vacation)there has been much Skunk Ape chatter around the lakeside cabin we are staying in. The only evidence of a Skunk Ape appearance has been an occasional gastly smell. Have you ever seen a Sasquatch? What is your local mythological beast? Please share.

Our mythical beast is some sort of a National Championship carrying Bear. Everyone around here talks about this "Legend" but no one can ever seem to produce any recent hard evidence. I will say this though, the specter looms large and influences many people around here. One might say that they are "obsessed"...Alabama, gotta love it.
After last week, I'm actually becoming a believer, as the smell associated with this beast seemed to loom in the Florida backwoods. On occasion it would even find its way into our cabin! Interesting...
